Police support officer appointed
08 April 2016
MIB's work to continously engage and support police across the UK to tackle uninsured driving has been strengthened with the appointment of a new police support officer.
Former West Midlands Police Inspector Paul Bennett has joined MIB's enforcement services team after heading up the West Midland's Police's fatal investigation unit. Paul has spent 25 years in roads policing.
In this role at MIB, Paul will be providing a vital link between MIB's Police Helpline service, based in Milton Keynes, and the UK's 45 police forces. The Police Helpline handles around 3,000 calls a week from roads policing officers checking vehicle insurance cover.
He will be working out of MIB and also Central Motorway Police Group's office in Perry Barr in Birmingham.
Neil Drane, Head of Enforcement Services at MIB said:
"MIB is committed to working in partnership with police forces as part of its police engagement activities. It has been investing more time and resource in this relationship, so that forces can be supported in their work to take uninsured drivers off ours roads.
"Having Paul on board means we can visit forces more easily to explain MIB's work around uninsured driving, including the role of our dedicated team of 50 Police Helpline representatives who assist officers with their roadside checks.
"Paul will also be able to feedback the views of police forces about the service we offer and what officers value, or perhaps recommend for improvement."
As a newcomer to MIB Paul adds: "I can also help forces understand some of the finer points of the law, enforcement and motor insurance which, as a former police officer, I know can sometimes be a challenge to understand and interpret correctly.
"I will be doing this by giving presentations on MIB's work, sharing MIB's technical guides , and explaining some of the nuances of insurance law as it affects the Road Traffic Act and the seizure of vehicles."
Paul will be representing MIB on the National Roads Policing Intelligence Form.
