The difference MIB makes… in numbers
28 January 2025

You may think that insurance is a bit of a dry subject. It’s one of those things that you have to make sure you have – for your home, your possessions, your car, your pet, your life. But for those who are victims of people drivers who don’t have insurance, it suddenly becomes very real.
That’s where MIB comes in. We stand in the gap for the victims of uninsured and hit-and-run drivers. And here’s what we’re up against.
- Every 20 minutes, someone is the victim of an uninsured or hit-and-run driver. That’s three an hour, 72 a day, more than 26,000 a year.
- Every day, at least one person is so seriously injured by an uninsured or hit-and-run driver that they need lifelong care. That’s more than 360 people a year whose lives are forever changed for the worse.
- Every week, at least one person is killed by a driver who is not insured. That’s more than 50 people a year whose lives are cut short, more than 50 families a year who lose a loved one.
- Every day, there is an average of 300,000 uninsured vehicles on UK roads. The total number across the year is over 1 million.
- Every year, using government figures, we estimate that uninsured and hit-and-run drivers cost the economy almost £2.4 billion.
But we’re fighting back. For almost 80 years, MIB has been standing up for the victims of uninsured and hit-and-run drivers. Here’s the impact we’ve been making.
- Every four minutes, the police take an uninsured vehicle off the road with the help of our Police Helpline and the Motor Insurance Database. That’s 360 vehicles a day, around 130,000 a year.
- In 2024, we paid more than £400 million in compensation, so that we could support those whose lives have been affected by uninsured and hit-and-run drivers.
- In 2024, our Police Helpline answered around 45,000 calls from police officers working to keep uninsured drivers off our roads.
- In 2024, we received more than 3 billion enquiries across our data services from insurers and the police.
- Over the last 20 years, our work with government, insurers and the police has helped seize more than 2.5 million uninsured vehicles. And one in every three of those vehicles is crushed and recycled.
There’s still a lot to do, but MIB is working with police, insurers and the government to make even bigger cuts to the number of uninsured vehicles on the road, thinking of new ways to make a difference and inspiring others to do the same. And, until we meet our aim of ending uninsured driving for good, we’re here to compensate victims quickly, fairly and compassionately.
