Ghost Broking will be the subject of a cross-industry, awareness campaign in September being run on behalf of General Insurance Fraud Committee (GIFC) by the IFB. Digital adverts will be targeted at 18–39-year-old men on social media channels warning them of the consequences of buying from a Ghost Broker and how to spot the signs of a fraudulent policy.
Because that demographic are most heavily targeted by Ghost Brokers on social media channels - mainly Instagram and Facebook - we'll be using those channels to spread the word that Ghost Broking exists and show how not to become a victim.
Matthew Stevens, Chair of the Application Fraud working group of the GIFC, said: "Ghost Broking poses a real threat to the insurance industry and to unsuspecting members of the public who can fall victim to it, often without realising it. This awareness campaign is crucial in spreading the word that Ghost Broking exists and will help people spot and avoid these fraudsters."
The targeted, digital ad campaign will use short, visually impactful videos and imagery to educate about the consequences of buying a fraudulent policy and how to spot the signs of a Ghost Broker.
The campaign will be complemented with consumer PR and social media content to help highlight this increasingly prevalent type of fraud across a wide audience.
